North East Lincolnshire Labor councilor Janet Haggis has sadly died after battling a brain tumor while still working as an elected official. Cllr Haggis represented the Sidney Sussex Ward in North East Lincolnshire and was a trade union activist for several years.

She was diagnosed with a brain tumor a few years ago, but still continued to perform her duties as a counselor. Labor North East Lincolnshire Group announced that her cancer had spread and she “passed away peacefully at home surrounded by those closest to her.”

The Labor group observed a minute’s silence after her death yesterday and the Grimsby Town Hall flag was flown at half-mast as a mark of respect. “On behalf of the North East Lincolnshire Labor Group, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Janet’s family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time,” Labor North East Lincolnshire Group said. “We also want to express our deep gratitude for all that Janet has given to our movement, our community and the people of Sidney Sussex.”

“Janet grew up in Sidney Sussex and was immensely proud and honored to be chosen to represent the community she loves. A dedicated trade unionist, dedicated campaigner and lifelong Labor activist, Janet was an integral part of the Labor movement and worked tirelessly on behalf of local residents throughout her years of public service.

“Janet’s service, friendship and dedication will not be forgotten. May she rest in peace”

North East Lincolnshire Labor Group Leader Councilor Emma Clough, said: “She provided great input to the group so for her to struggle through that and then be met with another health challenge, it was unfortunately too much for her. It was devastating to hear.

“Janet remains with us as an integral part of the Labor family and it makes us more determined to work hard for local people. The biggest gap that Janet leaves is her personality.

“Janet was no nonsense, no judgement, she was so much fun and she brought a spark to the Labor group and ideas that were real community anchored ideas. What we will miss is Janet’s determination to get on the ground real life things that touched people every day.”

North East Lincolnshire Labor councilor Robson Augusta said he knew Cllr Haggis before either of them became councilors because she was his union representative and added: “I think it’s really remarkable how much she has put up to represent her community.”

He said: “Losing a member of our group in any way is tragic and especially as Janet ended up dying too. She was only at a council meeting in March. It has come as a deep shock but also a personal tragedy for our group.”

“Her loss will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with her.”

Cllr Clough said the Labor group will honor her memory and “see” the idea of Cllr Haggis’ chatty benches, which she believed would be used as a way to help people who feel lonely.
