A Greek food blogger says adding it to the pan before the egg is cracked gives it so much more flavor – and the whole thing is ready in under 10 minutes
Fried eggs are always a delicious choice for breakfast or lunch. Whether you have them on avocado toast, rice or any other dish, they are ready in minutes and are one of the easiest ways to cook eggs.
Nevertheless, one disadvantage of a fried egg is that it is quite difficult to improve with flavor. Unlike eggs, you can’t easily add cheese or cream for additional flavor, and sauce can sometimes slide easily.
However, according to one food writer, the key is to add your flavor enhancers right to the pan before adding the egg.
Greek food blogger Mia Kouppa suggests one simple ingredient to add to your fried eggs for exceptionally crispy and flavorful results—and it’s feta cheese.
She said: “It’s a quick and absolutely delicious way to make a fried egg. It only requires a few ingredients, is ready in under 10 minutes, and requires almost no cooking skills. The best part is how the feta melts, but also gets super crispy in areas.”
One reason this recipe is so effective is that the feta won’t turn into a gooey mess in the pan – instead, it will develop a lovely crust that complements the egg beautifully. Combined with a touch of olive oil, it is the ideal quick recipe that you will want to make again and again.
Here is everything you need to do it.
Feta fried eggs
Ingredients (serves one)
- 15 ml of olive oil
- 55 g of crushed feta
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
- A big egg
- salt and pepper
- A piece of toast
Method
Heat your olive oil over medium heat in a small frying pan. Scatter the crumbled feta in a circle around the edge of the pan, leaving the center empty – ideally large enough to fit the yolk of the egg.
Sprinkle the red pepper flakes over the feta.
Cook until you see and hear the feta sizzling and start to melt, which will take a few minutes.
Place the egg over the feta, taking care to position the yolk in the middle of the pan. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Boil the egg until it reaches your desired consistency. After a minute or two, you can put a lid on the frying pan to make the yolk easier to cook.
You can also turn the egg into the feta if you like. Finally, serve the egg on toast and enjoy.
