BRONX (WABC) — A car chase that spanned two boroughs ended in a police-involved shooting Saturday night.
Police said the shooting occurred in the Grand Concourse area at 161st Street and Summit Avenue, but the incident actually stemmed from a report of a car break-in in Manhattan.
Officers initially arrived at the scene at 149 Street and Convent Avenue in Hamilton Heights to investigate a car break-in.
Officials said they were working at the scene when they saw a vehicle driving recklessly nearby.
Police began pursuing the reckless driver and eventually reached the Bronx, where they arrested one of the occupants of the vehicle.
Officials said another suspect fled into a marshy area near the Major Deegan Expressway. Minutes later, the suspect confronted police and pointed the weapon at police.
“Members of the 3-0 precinct are currently engaged in a gunfight with this individual. After this gunfight, this individual ran into a wet area right next to Major Deegan, and a second gunfight ensued,” said NYPD Patrolman John Chell.
The police chief said the suspect was shot in the head and leg. The 39-year-old man is known to police and is in critical condition at a local hospital.
