A San Jose climber stranded on Mount Shasta injured his leg after descending 500 feet down the Avalanche Gulch route and crawled through the night to reach his cabin.

SISKILLE COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) — A San Jose climber was injured while descending Mount Shasta and was airlifted to a hospital after crawling to safety, forest officials said.
Officials say the man made the summit at around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, but his cellphone malfunctioned and he was injured while descending the Avalanche Gulch route.
The climber said he tried to slip down the mountain, but lost control and slid about 500 feet, injuring his leg. Due to swelling, he took off his boots and crawled through Avalanche Gulch all night to reach the cabin.

On Friday, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office and other teams began searching for the climber after his friends reported him missing even though authorities had not been contacted.
At 4pm on Friday, another hiker found him at the hut and was able to contact mountain rangers.
The climber was later airlifted to a hospital.
