‘Dancing with the Stars’ Season 35 Premiere Night 2 saw intense dancing and was eliminated in Week 2

Fairfax District, Los Angeles — The ballroom reopened for action Tuesday for the second night of the season 35 premiere of “Dancing with the Stars.” On the first night of competition, the boys spent their time in the spotlight, but now it’s the girls who will decide the match.

The premiere was divided into two episodes, one featuring male celebrities and the other featuring female stars. Eliminations were held each night.

Dancing with the Stars is finally returning for Season 35. The new season festivities kicked off with two nights of special premieres.

What is the theme for the first week? Stars are delivering nostalgia with performances set to the No. 1 song of the year they were born.

The first star sent home Tuesday was “Mormon Wives” husband Connor Leavitt.

Tatiana Ali

Actress Tatyana Ali and professional Jan Ravnik kicked off the night with a jive to Amii Stewart’s “Knock on Wood.” Judge Carrie Ann Inaba said Jive had gotten off to a bit of a rocky start, but said she was showing some firepower that showed a strong woman. Judge Derek Hough reminded the group that the first week was a big learning curve and said he wanted to see Tatiana in the second week and said he was looking forward to seeing Tatiana in her ballroom dancing style. Judge Bruno Tonioli said Tatiana was talented and said this gave her a reason to work hard and get better.

Olympic ice skater Amber Glenn and professional Pasha Pashkov performed the Cha Cha to “Smooth” by Santana feat. Rob Thomas. Derek praised Amber’s awareness of her body and the space around it, but said he wanted her to be more grounded. Bruno said he thought she attacked the dance like a warrior queen and loved her attitude and the fact that she really went for it. Carrie Ann reminds her that she is not a solo skater, but now part of a duo, and tells her to keep Pasha in mind.

Ciara Miller

“Summer House” star Ciara Miller and professional Brandon Armstrong performed the foxtrot to Whitney Houston’s “Exhale (Shoop Shoop).” Bruno said Ciara brought the sophisticated elegance of the foxtrot to a T-shaped fit, but reminded her that control and flow are important. Carrie Ann encouraged Ciara to believe in herself, telling her that when she feels and expresses her emotions, she becomes a great dancer. Derek agreed that she had work to do, but asked her to go to rehearsal, get out of her own head, and know that she was okay.

Giada De Laurentiis

TV chef Giada De Laurentiis and professional Alan Bersten performed a tango to Shocking Blue’s “Venus.” Carrie Ann praised Giada for teaching her daughter that it was okay to do scary things and to try them, and said she did it respectfully. Derek said he felt it was a little too cautious and fragile and wanted to see more power and belief. Bruno advised her to blend the steps into actual dancing and to set very clear intentions with each routine.

Julia Stiles

Actress Julia Stiles and professional Ezra Sosa performed the quickstep to Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5.” Derek called the dance beautiful and graceful, and said he thought Julia was glowing throughout the performance. He encouraged her to attack the dance a little harder to move forward with more energy. Bruno praised her role and said he saw a lot of potential. Carrie Ann said she thought Julia was glowing and had a clean routine, but asked her to try to learn the difference between leaning forward and extending.

Reality TV star Maura Higgins and pro Mark Ballas performed the foxtrot to Alana Miles’ “Black Velvet.” Bruno described the dancing as silky smooth and quality moves for the first week. He said he expected a lot from her! Carrie Ann said she thought the dancing was mesmerizing and her jaw dropped at the quality of it. Derek said the dance was smooth, sensual, mysterious and elegant, everything he wanted to see in a foxtrot.

Model and “Love Thy Nader” star Sarah Jane Nader and professional Hailey Bills jive to Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8er Boi.” Carrie Ann said out loud what many were thinking…the dance was “super hot.” And many in the queer community felt they saw a pairing of Sarah Jane and a female pro. Derek said that there were a lot of good moments with potential, but that Sarah Jane needed more substance and that the dancing was out of sync. Bruno said he likes her attitude and the way she expresses herself, but the timing and synchronicity just don’t work.

“The Rookie” star Jenna Dewan and professional Val Chmerkovskiy performed a tango to Blondie’s “Call Me.” Derek said Jenna added a “go” to the tango and said she has a broad stroke, but since she’s not new, he wants to see the finer details (pun intended). Bruno thought he was “obsessed with” the character, but wanted Jenna to put more weight on her shoulders, calling it a bad hip-hop habit. Carrie Ann scolds the couple about the elevator, telling them it doesn’t have to be nice.

Who was sent home?

Following issues with Tuesday night’s voting, hosts Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough announced that online voting would be resumed and running for the second night of the premiere. It also announced that Tuesday’s episode received the highest ratings in the past nine years.
