Novotny’s three goals and two assists in a 6-0 Peterborough Petes romp over the Barrie Colts pushed him to 16 points through 10 games and had the Czech winger fourth in the league on Sunday morning. Saginaw Spirit forward Dima Zhilkin leads with 21 points.

“It all came from great teamwork,” Novotny told the Peterborough Examiner after the scoring outburst against Barrie. “We played a great game as a team tonight and when the team plays like that, it helps me a lot.”

It was the second win in a row and third in four starts for Peterborough (5-7-0-0), which looks like a contender on paper but is off to a modest start. They finished 40-24-1-3 last season and got 34 goals and 65 points from Novotny along the way. He was a first-round pick (No. 24 overall) by the Canucks at the NHL Draft in Buffalo last June.

“I always believed in this group that we could get back on track,” Novotny, 18, explained. “Of course we still have a lot to prove. We just have to stay positive. Every team has times like this, and I’m glad it came at the beginning and not the end of the season. We can get better and better and learn from it.”

All three of Novotny’s goals came on the power play and were part of a 5-of-6 night with the man advantage for Peterborough. The Petes power play was fourth in the OHL for Sunday, hitting 30.9 percent (17-of-55).

Novotny tipped in a Cooper Dennis at 1:07 of the second period to make it 2-0. He ripped a shot past Barrie goalie Hagan Bach from the right face-off circle on a 4-on-3 at 16:55 of the second to make it 5-0, then made a stop on the rebound from close at 12:50 of the third to finish the scoring.

Peterborough picks up the action on Thursday, playing host to Canucks prospect Brooks Rogowski and his Oshawa Generals teammates. Oshawa (4-5-2-0) is then at home in Peterborough on Friday. The Generals were set to face the Kitchener Rangers on Sunday. Rogowski has yet to score a goal this season, but has seven assists through nine games. Rogowski, 18, was a second-round pick (No. 33 overall) by Vancouver in June.
