Firefighters have provided an update on a fire in a building that may be used for asylum seekers. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue were called to a fire at Roman Court in Leverington on the night of October 21.

The fire “severely damaged” the building. The police are treating the fire as arson. After a “complex fire investigation”, the fire department brought an update on the cause of the fire.

A fire spokesman said: “Crews left the scene of the incident at 10.30pm after extinguishing the fire. They checked the scene the following morning to ensure it was safe and there was no further fire spread or hotspots.”

“After a complex fire investigation, due to the significant damage to the building and the fire fighting, a precise cause could not be determined.”

At the beginning of October, Fenland District Council was told by the Home Office that the Roman court building could be used for women and children seeking asylum.

FDC shared their concerns that the site is “not equipped” to hold asylum seekers. After the fire, an FDC spokesman said it was “appalling to see” that there was a fire at the Roman court. The council asked anyone with information to contact the police.
