A stunning spectacle of dancers, live music and lanterns will take over a park in Salford this October half term as part of the city’s centenary celebrations. Taking place throughout the year, Salford 100 has seen an ongoing cultural program funded by Salford City Council.

As part of the events, the Wagon Train, a pop-up entertainment hub, toured the district throughout the summer, hosting fun performance events. Now it is set to host a grand final on Sunday, October 25, at Seedley Park, part of Buile Hill Park.

Taking place from 6pm to 10pm, the free event is a “magical outdoor spectacle” created by outdoor art curators Walk the Plank. It will celebrate the city’s heritage, shine a spotlight on today’s talent and look to Salford’s future.

With room for an audience of up to 3000 people, the event will feature aerial performances, a glittering time capsule, a “giant birthday cake” and the Wagon Train of Inventions, which celebrates innovations such as electricity and space exploration. It will also feature dancers representing the heyday of Salford’s entertainment nightlife, from ballroom to northern soul, along with live music and DJs.

The event involved local children who had the chance to work with artists to create the “Fuel of the Future” – lanterns made of willow and tissue paper – which will be carried by the children in the performance. Adding to the spectacle, Pride of Salford torchbearers will arrive to launch a huge firework display, designed by young people, before a fireworks finale lights up the night sky.

Speaking about the final event, Liz Pugh, co-founder of Walk the Plank, said: “The Wagon Train Final will be a chance for families and communities to come together to celebrate Salford’s centenary with a bang, while looking at the city’s bright future and shining a spotlight on homegrown talent.
