Storm Boelo caused travel chaos in the UK this weekend.

Gale force winds brought down trees and damaged overhead power lines on the rail network.

This led to disruption on certain routes, with some services cancelled.

Chris Halpin, from Network Rail, said the stormy conditions made things “very challenging” for engineers to keep people on the move.

He urged people to check before travelling, adding: “We are currently seeing gale force winds on parts of the rail network.

“If this brings trees down onto the tracks, they can block lines or become tangled in a complex network of 25,000 volt electrical wires that carry electricity.

“Sometimes it’s not just trees either, we’ve seen trampolines blown out of people’s gardens and even garden sheds.

“So please, put things down when windy weather like this is forecast.”

An X-Post from Manchester Piccadilly, reposted from Birmingham New Street, read: “Strong winds brought down trees and damaged overhead power lines, disrupting trains on certain routes.

“Our teams are working hard to clear debris and safely reopen lines, but some services will be cancelled.

“Please continue to check National Rail.”
