Rail passengers using the West Coast Main Line and routes in Lancashire and Cumbria are advised to check before traveling during stormy weather this weekend.
Network Rail teams are ready to respond to incidents caused by extreme weather at key locations on the West Coast Main Line, North West and Cumbrian rail routes in the coming days.
This includes monitoring areas that see lightning flooding of tracks, or trees being blown onto the grid causing disruption.
With the unpredictability of exactly where the weather strikes, people are advised to check www.nationalrail.co.uk before starting their journey.
Those who live by the railway are also advised to tie up any loose items in their gardens such as furniture, fencing and trampolines that could be blown onto the tracks by gusts of wind.
Ross Davies, Network Rail North West Network Operations Director, said: “Our team at the control center and also on the track are ready to deal with the weekend’s stormy weather, but the high winds and heavy rain are likely to cause short-term cancellations for trains.
“While we are as prepared as we can be, I ask the same of anyone planning to travel over the next few days and urge them to regularly check National Rail Inquiries before they start their journey to avoid being caught out by the storm.
“Even if you live by the railway, please tie up any loose garden items – it’s amazing what can be carried by a strong gust of wind and end up on the tracks – causing unnecessary delays for passengers and freight.”
