The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spent the morning at the Nottingham Community Recording Studio to start their day. They were greeted with hugs by CRS chief executive and co-founder Trevor Rose and Jah Diggah, a musician, poet and youth mentor who was helped by CRS as a child to escape gang violence and has worked as a mentor for the charity since 2017.
The group then moved into the building’s sports hall, and after a group photo with young school children, sat down next to Trevor and a group of CRS youth to watch an acting workshop led by actor André Squire.
He chose text from Our style is legendarya play by his friend, the Nottingham-based writer Daniel Hoffman-Gill, which tells the story of two friends, teenagers Danny and Richard, a comedy with some dark plots that also tackle drug abuse and suicide.
Harry and Meghan watched Mohammed Kone, 20, and a girl named Evie read a scene between Danny and his love interest, Shelley. After reading the first scene, André said, “Maybe Dany likes Shelley,” the other kids laughed.
Harry and Meghan applauded them after the scene – “that was great,” Meghan told them – and asked the group: “Did you find the characters relatable?”
Before leaving the studio, Harry and Meghan met Amelia Faith Currie, 14, from Clifton, who performed one of her own songs about peer pressure for the couple in an intimate recording studio and booth.
To introduce her, Trevor told Harry and Meghan how Amelia had recently told him how much she wanted to meet the Sussexes. “I told her, two days later we got a phone call saying you could come down.” Meghan said: “That’s so funny.”
After performing their song, the couple applauded, joining Amelia in the recording booth, hugging her. “Bravo! Look at you!” Meghan told her. “Keep singing, just keep singing,” Harry said.
Afterwards, Amelia said: “They said I was great, I was a bit shocked to be fair. Meghan said she wanted me to record a cover of a song – Letter to my 13-year-old self – and she wants to hear it. I know the song, Meghan said she would send it to me.
