In the first phase of generative AI, transactions were relatively simple. You asked the chatbot a question and decided whether to trust its answer or not. Personal AI agents change that deal. Meta’s new Muse lets you connect to your email and calendar, browse the web, fill out forms, make purchases, and connect across the apps people use every day. It can remember personal settings and continue working even after the user closes the app. It’s not just a smarter chatbot. This is the beginning of something more strategically important: the AI layer that sits between people and their digital lives.
From a strategic point of view, the Muse is essentially a land grab of control points. Meta is betting that the most valuable position in consumer AI may not be having the smartest model, but being the trusted interface through which people interact with the rest of their digital lives. A control point is a position that gives a company disproportionate influence over how other companies access resources, make choices, and create value. Google has a search. Apple has an App Store. Nvidia built around AI computing. A successful private agent can become another agent.
Perhaps that’s the larger ambition behind Mark Zuckerberg’s alleged push. “Personal superintelligence.” Muse is an early attempt to translate that vision into a consumer product, an agent that can generate answers and take action across the services people rely on. As consumers increasingly rely on a single agent to find information, book travel, make purchases, manage their calendars, or interact with other digital services, that agent begins to influence which companies, products, and information users encounter. The strategic gains are enormous.
Meta has unusual advantages
Meta enters this race with a distribution lever that most AI startups can only dream of. Its platform is used by billions of people, and WhatsApp already provides a natural conversational interface for users to communicate every day. Muse is designed to work there as well as through its own app. Therefore, Meta does not need to persuade consumers to adopt completely unfamiliar ways of interacting with technology. It could bring agents to locations where agents are already present.
But Meta also faces an unusual drawback: trust. Muse arrives just weeks after Meta agrees to pay top dollar $18 billion to settle US lawsuits This lawsuit was filed by nearly every state in the United States alleging harm to children by social media platforms. Meta has not admitted any wrongdoing, but its history means consumers may hold themselves to higher standards before allowing the company access to the more intimate parts of their lives. This is the contradiction at the heart of Meta’s strategy. The companies with perhaps the greatest ability to distribute personal AI agents may have one of the most difficult jobs: getting users to trust their AI agents.
From response to performance
There’s an important psychological difference between asking an AI to recommend restaurants and allowing it to make reservations, access your calendar, and pay your bill. First, you need to have faith in the answer. Second, you need to trust the actor. Meta clearly recognizes this. Muse runs inside a dedicated, secure virtual machine. Users can decide which services they want to access, sensitive actions like sending emails or making purchases require approval, and users receive an audit trail of what agents have done. Meta also notes that users can opt out of having their Muse interactions used for model training, and that Muse data will not be shared with advertising systems.
These are real safeguards. But while privacy can be manipulated, trust is earned over time. Consumers will judge Muse not only on what its architecture technically allows, but also on whether they trust Meta will continue to act in their interests as the product becomes more powerful and economically valuable.
This distinction is particularly important to Zuckerberg’s vision of personal superintelligence. The more useful an agent is, the more context it needs. And the more context there is, the greater the outcome if users believe that access may ultimately serve the platform’s interests as much as their own.
Permits can become a scarce resource
The consumer AI race is often discussed as a race over models. It’s about which AI is the smartest, fastest, and most capable. Muse suggests the next tournament could be different. As models become more capable and compatible, competitive advantage may shift to who knows the user, who has access to the user’s context, and, most importantly, who receives permission to act. This makes the permit itself strategically valuable.
The meta is already very influential. If Muse can convince users to move from answering questions to managing aspects of their lives, it could occupy one of the most important positions in the consumer AI ecosystem. However, you cannot simply assume access because the user already has an Instagram or WhatsApp account. An agent who knows what you’re buying, where you’re going, who you’re going to meet, and what you’re worried about will seek a fundamentally different relationship. The real competition can extend beyond model performance. So the winner of personal AI may not be the company that develops the smartest model. It may be a company that the consumer trusts enough to hand over the keys.
