Male shot by ICE agent in New York City’s Marble Hill, DHS says

A man was hospitalized after being shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in the Marble Hill neighborhood of New York City on Thursday, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The shooting happened around 4 p.m. local time near West 225th Street and Marble Hill Avenue.

Officials said he was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The NYPD was not involved in the shooting, the department said.

Video of the scene showed numerous law enforcement personnel present. A gray vehicle with a bullet hole in the windshield could be seen in the middle of the road.

Two law enforcement sources told CBS News that preliminary information indicated that ICE agents were attempting to take someone into custody when another man, who was not the target of the arrest, was shot.

DHS, the parent agency of ICE, said officials are conducting a targeted enforcement operation to arrest a man from the Dominican Republic who they claim is living in the United States illegally.

DHS said an ICE officer discharged his weapon during the incident, injuring the man.

“ICE officers rendered immediate assistance. The individual is alive and at a local hospital. The FBI and HSI are on scene. The incident remains under investigation. More information will be shared as it becomes available,” DHS said.

DHS claims that the male victim had associations with the Trinitarios gang, and a previous arrest for assault and a criminal conviction for grand larceny, robbery, possession of drugs and possession of weapons. According to DHS, he was arrested by the NYPD in December 2023, but released a few days later.

In a post on social media, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that based on “early reports”, there was a 5-year-old child in a car with the victim when “multiple rounds” were fired. Mamdani said the child was not injured.

The mayor added that he has made a call to President Trump to “demand that he end all ICE enforcement actions in our city.”

An FBI official said his Evidence Response Team is responding to the scene to assist with investigators from DHS.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she had been informed of the shooting.

“We expect federal authorities to provide a complete and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident,” Hochul wrote on social media. “New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.”

“I am deeply troubled by reports of a shooting with ICE agents in Marble Hill this afternoon. Federal authorities must provide us with a fully transparent account of what took place without delay. I recognize the immense fear that ICE’s actions have caused immigrant New Yorkers, and I am deeply concerned about the additional anxiety and uncertainty throughout the city of this incident in New York communities. Menin op posted on social media.

Authorities are continuing to investigate.

There have been at least 30 shootings involving DHS officers during the second Trump administration, according to a CBS News analysis, some of which have turned deadly.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
