And according to De Telegraaf, the former striker will take charge of the Turkish club for at least the next three games following Ismail Kartal’s resignation.

Kartal stopped his FOURTH Spell in charge of the team on Tuesday after their 2-1 derby defeat against rivals Galatasaray, despite only taking over in June.

His assistant boss Kuyt is now set to take charge of their next league game against Goztepe on Saturday.

And his second game will be an emotional clash against Liverpool when they host Andoni Iraola’s side in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Kuyt is expected to manage Fenerbahce at least until the international break.

Fenerbahce are looking to climb the Champions League table after just one win and three defeats so far.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have won all three of their league games under Iraola.

Kuyt was due to receive a warm welcome from the traveling Liverpool fans after a successful spell at Anfield which saw him score 71 goals and in the 2011 League Cup.

He also helped the Reds reach the 2006-07 Champions League final before losing to AC Milan.

Kuyt scored in that 2-1 defeat, but it was only a consolation after Filippo Inzaghi opened the scoring with a slot.

Kuyt – who began his playing career in the Netherlands with Utrecht and Feyenoord – later played for Fenerbahce for three seasons after leaving Liverpool.

He played 130 times for the Turkish club, scoring 37 goals before ending his playing days with Dutch boyhood club Quick Boys.

Kuyt has already taken on a number of coaching roles since retiring in 2018 – first with Feyenoord’s under-19s before a short spell in charge of ADO Den Haag.

He then managed Beerschot and FC Dordrecht before becoming Kartal’s assistant this summer.

Kuyt’s new role at Fenerbahce comes after a turbulent period for the club which has seen them finish fifth in the league.

Their crushing defeat against league leaders Galatasaray was their third league loss of the season.

They are now six points behind their bitter rivals.
