Independent Durham greengrocer still going strong after 30 years

Durham City Fruiterers, based in Durham Market Hall, has become a familiar sight for generations of shoppers, with customers supporting independent business despite the growing dominance of supermarkets and online grocery deliveries.

For more than 30 years, the family-run retailer has been delivering fresh produce to households across the city, stocking everything from everyday staples to a wide variety of seasonal fruit and vegetables.

In a recent social media post celebrating the business, Durham Market Hall said shoppers “can safely say they know a thing or two about apples and pears”, while highlighting the importance of a varied and colorful diet.

The post encouraged people to “eat the rainbow,” explaining that different colored fruits and vegetables contain different vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

But the market also emphasized that shopping with Durham City Fruiterers offers benefits beyond healthy eating.

“Every purchase helps support a small, independent family business,” Post said.

It said buying local “keeps money circulating in our local economy” and “helps preserve the unique character that makes Durham Market Hall so special”.

The market praised the retailer’s “friendly service and fantastic fresh produce that you just can’t beat” and urged locals to make it their “first stop” for dinner, lunch and healthier eating.

Durham Market Hall also highlighted the wider impact of supporting independent traders, telling shoppers: “By skipping the supermarket and supporting your local greengrocer, you’re supporting a small business with fresh produce at fair prices, which, in turn, helps our market hall thrive.”

Located in Durham Market Hall, Durham City Fruiterers remains a staple of the city’s shopping scene more than three decades after opening.

For many customers, the business not only offers fresh produce, but also a connection to one of Durham’s longest established independent retailers, with its continued success demonstrating the enduring appeal of local shopping and community-focused businesses.
