Peel Police say an incident at the University of Toronto Mississauga campus was “contained” to a single housing unit after students were told to shelter in place Monday night.
Residents are asked to continue to protect themselves in place. However, there are no reported injuries and the incident is now “isolated,” police said in a post on social media platform X.
The immediate area has been evacuated, the police added.
A large police presence remains in the area of Mississauga Road and Outer Circle Road, and people are asked to continue to avoid the area, police said. Police said they have expanded their specialist services at the scene.
The police were called about the situation at 9:11 p.m. In an alert issued by the university after 21:00, students were told to take shelter on the UTM campus due to an “active threat.”
The school said it received reports of police activity at the McLuhan Court residence, 3330 Residence Road.
“Active threat. Take shelter immediately and secure doors,” the students said in a post on social media platform X.
After the university, the police secured the area of the McLuhan courthouse. UTM said shortly after midnight on its website that its lockdown would continue.
In an email late Monday, the University of Toronto’s media relations department said the shelter-in-place alert has gone out to the campus community. It said it would send alerts to the campus community every 30 minutes until police deemed the area safe.
Peel Regional Paramedic Services had said they were on standby at a staging area but had not been called to the scene.
