Proud father-of-the-bride David, 88, walking his daughter down the aisle
Wedding bells rang at a care home in Grimsby as the team organized a special ceremony for a resident’s family member. When the team at Care UK’s Old Norse Lodge, Matthew Telford Park, found out that 88-year-old David Sutton’s daughter was getting married, they pulled out all the stops to bring the wedding to his door.
The team was first joined by Christine Harper, who was looking to tie the knot with her partner but wanted her father, who was too vulnerable to travel, to be there on her special day. Christine is a familiar face at home – an in-house hairdresser for over two years, she is known for putting a smile on residents’ faces through her makeovers.
So it was no surprise when she said that she also wanted to celebrate with the locals, with whom she had made close connections. On the big day, it was their turn to step into the limelight as the house was decorated to emulate all the magic of a traditional wedding celebration, complete with candles, a flower arch and the presence of a vicar.
The event follows the couple’s legal ceremony, which took place earlier in a local church. During the ceremony, the bride was proudly escorted down the aisle by her father, who held her flowers, in a touching moment witnessed by close family, residents and her fellow team members.
After the ceremony, guests gathered in the home’s lounge for a joyous reception, complete with live music by the bride’s sister. To end the festivities, guests and residents gathered to enjoy a wedding buffet specially prepared by the head chef of the home and a final toast to the newlyweds.
The bride’s proud father David said: “What an amazing day. I can’t believe everyone managed to keep this quiet until the morning!
“It was the best day, and Chris looked so beautiful that when I saw her in her dress, I couldn’t hold back the tears. They just wouldn’t stop.”
Christine said: “What can I say other than, wow, what a fantastic day we had. You made our dream come true.
“My father was so happy and proud and so was I. It was so nice to surprise not only my father, but also the residents who are like my extended family at home.”
Rachael Smith, home manager at Old Norse Lodge, said: “When Christine approached us with her wedding request, we knew we had to do everything we could to make it happen for her and David. Walking his daughter down the aisle was a really emotional moment for everyone.
“Experiences like this are at the heart of what we do, creating meaningful moments and helping families make lasting memories together, whatever their circumstances. It was such a privilege to be a part of this wonderful ceremony. It was a beautiful day filled with love that will surely stay with everyone who attended for a very long time.”
