The former leader of the Green Group on Cambridgeshire County Council has resigned from the Green Party. Cllr Elliot Tong, who is also a Cambridge city councillor, said he no longer felt the party allowed him to stand up for what was right.

He led the group on the county council until May of this year, after being first elected to represent the Abbey ward in 2025. He has also represented the abbey in the municipal council since 2023 and was previously deputy of the Green faction in the municipal council.

Cllr Tong confirmed that he will continue to sit as an independent councilor on both councils. He said he had grown increasingly disillusioned with the party, which he said had opposed the construction of council housing and pushed back on its support for Palestine.

In a statement released on Friday (October 2), he said: “Today I have resigned from the Green Party, as well as the Green Group in both the city and county councils. I entered politics because I wanted to stand up for what is right. I no longer feel that the Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire Green Party will allow me to do this.

“Locally, my green colleagues have pushed back against council housing in their own neighborhoods, I have been threatened for standing up for Palestinians and saying that this is not important.

“Behind the scenes, I’ve been mocked for my neurodivergence. My loyalty will always be to doing what’s right, not what’s convenient. I’m excited to continue standing up for regular people across Cambridge.”

The group leaders of the Green Party on the city council, Cllr Sefira Davison and county councillor, Cllr Darren Green, issued a joint statement in response to the resignation, which they said was “disappointing and a shock”.

They said: “As we are currently away at party conference, we do not have all the facts on the ground. Our feeling at the moment is that in our time in politics we will know Elliot as a campaigner, as a colleague and a friend.

“To hear from Elliot that he no longer felt able to stand as a Green was a disappointment and a shock. We first want to go on record as saying that any form of harassment or discrimination is not acceptable to us, nor is it compatible with Green values. It should not be acceptable to anyone.

“Elliot was a steadfast colleague and a tireless councillor. His energy, enthusiasm and support will be missed and we hope to continue working together for the benefit of residents in both councils.”

“We want to reaffirm our strong commitment to local and national Green politics: our strong commitment to building truly affordable housing and stopping the genocide in Gaza, and true solidarity with Palestinians and Palestine.”
