Lord Botham to walk against Hope Moor wind farm

The former England cricketer, who lives near Richmond, is backing a campaign to stop Hope Moor Wind Farm, which will see 23 turbines installed at least 200m high on land between Arkengarthdale and Teesdale.

The star will take part in the Walk for Hope Moor on Sunday 11 October, organized by the Hope Moor Wind Farm Action Group.

Organizers say the event will give people the opportunity to experience the “scale, tranquility and beauty” of open moorland, while raising awareness of their campaign.

The walk starts at 10.30am, with registration from 9.30am at Barningham Village Hall.

The event is held under the campaign slogan “Keep Hope Moor Wild”.

Tim Wilson, of the Hope Moor Wind Farm Action Group, said they hoped Lord Botham’s involvement would help raise the profile of the campaign.

He added: “There has been a lot of comment about the impact on the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

“Over six million people visit these areas and the wind farm would have a massive impact in terms of enjoyment, comfort, views and the reasons people visit the area.

“We have very good local support and awareness. But we hope that an iconic figure like Lord Botham, who is very much a national treasure in many ways, and has a passion for wildlife and the country will be a really good voice to take it nationally and in Westminster.”

Fred. Olsen Renewables, which is behind the Hope Moor plans, welcomed feedback on the Hope Moor proposals and encouraged local people to have their say.

The company said the site was chosen because of its strong and consistent wind speeds, which it believes could help reduce carbon emissions and improve energy security.

It said further assessments will seek to avoid sensitive areas, minimize environmental impact and identify opportunities for peatland restoration.

The company also expects the wind farm’s long-term carbon savings to outweigh the emissions generated during construction.

Places on the walk are limited and must be reserved in advance.

Tickets cost £5 per person, with the price including a hot drink and homemade cake after the event.
