2026 National Book Award Longlist

This week, The New Yorker will publish the list of nominees for the 2025 National Book Award. literature for young peopletranslated literature, poetry, nonfiction, fiction. This year’s longlist includes fiction, nonfiction, a poetry novel, and one picture book. This year’s list includes several titles that explore the power of art and the written word. Some feature supernatural encounters or journeys through time and space. Two of the authors on the longlist, Elana K. Arnold and David Levithan, have previously been nominated for this award.

This year’s judge in this category is Edith Campbell, founder of We Are Kid Lit Collective. Brandi Colbert (Chairman), author of “The Black Birds of the Sky.” Tricia Everbia, co-founder of the Institute for Racial Equity in Literacy; Jarrett J. Krosochka’s graphic memoir Hey Kiddo was a 2018 National Book Award finalist. Ann Ursu’s novel The Real Boy was longlisted for the 2013 National Book Award.
